Welcome Mat and Shoes in FoyerIf you've never wondered how responsible of a homeowner you are, you should. There are certain habits that can render you as irresponsible. Why should you care? Because bad habits (such as skimping on Homeowners Insurance or failing to conduct an annual home inspection) can negatively affect your quality of life and cost you money. Avoid these bad homeowner habits and you'll be well on your way to earning that coveted "responsible homeowner" label.

Bad Habit #1: Wearing Your Shoes in the House

Many homeowners are guilty of this bad habit. Wearing your shoes indoors on doesn't mean you're a bad homeowner. But it is definitely a bad habit. University of Arizona researchers conducted a study involving shoes and germs. On average, they concluded, shoes contain on average 421,000 bacteria — including plenty of Escherichia coli (E coli; which is found in fecal matter). If you don't want to track fecal matter through your home, leave your shoes at the door.

Bad Habit #2: "Hiding" Your Spare Key Where Thieves Will Look for It

It's good to hide a spare key somewhere. Odds are good that you or a family member will lose your keys, lock them in your house or car, or leave them someplace at some point in the future. It's bad to hire a spare key under your doormat, inside a fake "key rock," or in a flower pot on your porch. Better options? Leave your spare key with a neighbor, in a magnetic box attached to the underside of your car, or tie it securely to a wind chime.

Bad Habit #3: Ignoring Your Gutters

Many homeowners classify rain gutters in the "if it isn't broke, don't fix it" category. This is understandable, as gutter cleaning is a nasty, unpleasant job. What's even nastier, though, is paying for costly home repairs after malfunctioning gutters cause flood damage. If you don't want to clean your own gutters, hire someone to do it. Just make sure to do it – ideally twice per year.
