A car accident is never something we expect to happen, but whether it is the result of someone running a red light or ice on the road, they do occur. Naturally when this happens, adrenaline will be pumping and emotions may be high. It is important to remain calm and follow these steps to manage the situation and its aftermath.
- Check On Other Drivers and Passengers. Make sure that you and all other drivers and passengers involved are okay. If there are any injuries — especially if it involves back or neck pain — do not move them.
- Call the Police. If there is significant damage to your vehicle, or any injuries, make sure to call the police and get emergency services on their way. Make sure to ask that an official police report be filed and get information of responding officers.
- Exchange Information. Be sure to get the names, phone numbers, drivers license number, license plate number and basic insurance information of all other drivers involved. Stay calm and be polite. Remember never to apologize for anything because you do not want to appear to be admitting fault for anything before an investigation is done.
- Talk To Witnesses. While the police should be getting witness statements, you want to get their statements and contact information for yourself. Ask what they saw and if they are local, if accidents are common at that location.
- Contact Your Insurance Company. Let your insurance company know as soon as possible that you have been in an accident. Answer all questions truthfully and be honest about what happened.
- Take Photos. As soon as you are able, take photos of the damage to your vehicle. Photos allow your insurer to more easily determine how much compensation you should receive.
- Keep Track Of Your Medical Expenses. Keep a detailed account of any doctors you see due to your injuries as well as any medications they prescribe. Request copies of medical reports and bills and keep a log of any days missed at work.
- Consider Hiring An Attorney. If there were any injuries, it may be best to consult an experienced attorney to help maximize your return if you were injured, or defend you if you were at fault.
The most important thing to remember is to stay calm and be patient. Recovering physically, emotionally and financially from an automobile accident will take time.
